The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games wrapped up recently with Queensland athletes well and truly proving that the Sunshine State is the home of sport!
Of the 70 gold medals won by the Australian team, Queensland athletes won 39 gold medals. In total, the Australian team brought home 171 medals with 85 of those won by Queensland athletes.
Specialised precincts like the State Athletics Facility and the National Throws Centre of Excellence at QSAC provide Queensland athletes with the facilities to train regularly, providing more opportunity to hone their skills. Many of the medal-winning athletes train at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre (QSAC) and Sleeman Sports Complex.
QSAC is proud to have played a part in the journey for Australia's star track athletes, including Torrie Lewis and Lachie Kennedy, who are the fastest male and female Australians in history.
Lachie Kennedy lived up to the hype on his Commonwealth Games debut, blasting to 9.85 seconds to claim silver and lower his own Australian record, while Torrie Lewis delivered history of her own, setting back-to-back Australian records across the women’s 100m semi-final and final.
From the Australian Dolphins' record-breaking swimming campaign and Australia's historic Athletics and Para Athletics performances, to Leigh Hoffman's golden week in the velodrome, Matt Denny's successful title defence, Eithen Leard's back-to-back wheelchair basketball gold, and a historic men's 4x100m relay victory, Queenslanders helped shape one of Australia's most successful Commonwealth Games campaigns.
Now, the Commonwealth Games flag passes to India for 2030.
