Queensland will host another major international sporting event, the World Wheelchair Rugby Cup in 2027!

Eight of the world’s leading wheelchair rugby nations will go head-to-head at Nissan Arena from 25 to 29 October 2027, with five days of fast-paced, hard-hitting international competition.

The World Wheelchair Rugby Cup is expected to attract thousands of athletes, officials, supporters and visitors, delivering a boost for local businesses and Queensland’s visitor economy.

Wheelchair Rugby Australia CEO Chris Nay said hosting the tournament in Brisbane would be a landmark moment for the sport.

“This World Cup puts Australia at the centre of the international wheelchair rugby calendar and gives fans the chance to see the sport at its absolute best on home soil,” Mr Nay said.

“Our ambition is to fill Nissan Arena and create the largest crowd ever recorded for a dedicated wheelchair rugby event outside the Paralympic Games.”

Australian Steelers athlete Ryley Batt said having a Wheelchair Rugby World Cup in Brisbane would be a special moment for athletes, fans and the broader community.

“There’s nothing quite like competing in front of a home crowd. To have a World Cup in Brisbane is special for our team, our fans and the whole wheelchair rugby community, and we can’t wait to showcase our sport on the world stage,” Mr Batt said.

“We want this to be a World Cup that delivers outstanding rugby, a huge atmosphere and an event that the athletes, supporters and wider wheelchair rugby community can be proud of.”

World Rugby Chair Brett Robinson said we are proud to support the World Wheelchair Rugby Cup in Brisbane and once again partner with World Wheelchair Rugby to bring our pinnacle competitions together on the global stage.

“We are delighted to bring both Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 and World Wheelchair Rugby Cup to Brisbane,” Mr Robinson said.

“The two tournaments are set to be fantastic spectacles for local and international fans and will create new opportunities to connect fans and showcase the best of our sports.”

Tickets will go on sale in 2027, with participating teams and the full event program to be announced early next year.
